Endangerment:
Causes
El Niño is an oscillation of the ocean-atmosphere in the
tropical Pacific having important consequences for weather around the globe. El
Niño had a big affect on the Humboldt Penguins. During El Niño periods, prey are
forced out of their natural habitat in search of food, for the penguins, their
main food source is fish. As a result, many of the penguins die of starvation.
Humans are the main reason why Humboldt Penguins are
endangered. The penguins use guano (feces) to build their nests. Humans destroy
and remove the guano during nesting season disrupting the penguins. Also, the
penguins could be caught in fishing nets used by commercial
fishermen.

Another cause is oil pollution. The oil comes from ships
and tankers surrounding the penguins' habitat threatening them.
